GoErie.com’s Dave Richards recently published his interview with Orlando-based band There For Tomorrow. Singer Maika Maile discusses winning an mtvU Woodie Award, beating out bands like All Time Low:
“People think if you get an award and a big old trophy on the wall, it means you’ll automatically skyrocket or start playing stadiums,” said Maile, 20.
“For us, it’s just a humbling thing. It really reassured us there were people out there willing to vote on the computer for There for Tomorrow. It was great to know we had mtvU on our side.
“It wasn’t anything of an ego boost to us. It just reassured us that our efforts were doing something.”
On his musical influences:
“My mind has been open to anything and everything from the beginning. I would take Metallica’s ‘And Justice for All’ out of my cassette player and put in Hanson’s ‘Middle of Nowhere,’” he said. “I wasn’t trying to listen to stuff because it was cool. I was listening to stuff because I loved it.”
Same goes for today. He likes Foo Fighters but also Rascal Flatts.
“You can’t really sit there and be super close-minded,” Maile said.
On the upcoming There For Tomorrow acoustic release:
“We’re huge appreciators of great production and high-end quality sound and engineering and all that,” Maile said. “But there’s still an organic chemistry to our band that people don’t understand is there.”
They will if the band keeps gaining momentum. They played the Warped Tour this past summer and may head overseas for the first time in 2010.
“This is really only the beginning for us,” Maile said. “We’re in it for the long run, so there’s no rush to it.”
