Sum 41’s Studio Update Day 13 marks the end of pre-production for the band’s upcoming album as well as the last webisode of 2009. Singer Deryck Whibley and bassist Cone McCaslin discuss the average size of a human man. The band will break for the holidays and resume recording in January. Expect the next Studio Update episode in early 2010.

Sum 41’s Studio Update Day 12 felt about as dreary as the rainy day it was filmed on in Los Angeles. Steve records a handful of drum tracks with Cone and Tom providing moral support. The weather influenced the guys to cancel their party plans and to stay at the studio for a movie and booze night. Deryck must have been worried about his hair in the rain, as he was M.I.A. throughout the webisode.

In Sum 41 Studio Update Day 11, lead guitarist Tom Thacker and bassist Cone McCaslin are left alone at the studio to talk about the weather. With pre-production nearly complete, Tom decides to debut a brand new song he wrote called “He’s My Cone.”

Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley is noticeably absent from the shenanigans of the band’s Studio Update – Day 10. In two parts, a majority of this webisode focuses on the awkward relationship between bassist Cone McCaslin and drummer Steve Jocz. A new title sequence kicks off this two-part update.
Sum 41 – Studio updates #7/#8 – Cone returns! (perhaps still suffering from a hangover) Steve get annoyed and threatens to “gone missing” too. He thinks the bass has two strings. Deryck talks about the 20+ songs he prepared for the album. The band attempts to arrange a song together.
Anyone know anything about Sum 41’s “sexy pool party”? Did it actually happen?

Sum 41’s longest “Studio Update” to date. Day 4 finds the boys back in the studio after a night (and morning?) of heavy drinking. Lead guitarist Brown Tom admits to crying to some crummy movie. Drummer Steve Jocz continues to be the most memorable cast member of this reality series. I’m still hooked and eagerly await the next episode (which will be day 5, Steve).

Sum 41’s “Studio Update” series is quickly becoming one of my favorite short-form online reality shows. I’m a fan of any show that competes in length with its title sequence. Basically, it’s short and sweet. Day 2’s episode was released today (see above). The band defines the term “pre-production” and Steve announces Deryck’s upcoming sexy pool party.
If you missed the debut episode, you can watch it below.
Sum 41 have officially started production on a new album. Drummer Steve Jocz just posted this update from the studio:
“First day in our swanky, top of the hill, orgy den, pimp pad/recording studio. This place is pretty badass. It’s a total 60s swingers pad and I think I found one of Jimmy Page’s old pubes in the bathroom – a little bit of rock history right there in my hand!!
The first day of rehearsing/practicing was badass. The songs are sounding saweet!
We went down to Ralph’s to stock up on supplies to the pimp palace and ended up spending $700 on booze and potato chips. Somehow – that combination makes us more “creative”.
Heading out to band dinner tonight – hopefully at one of those fancy sushi joints where you get to food off of hot babes.”
“gil norton and i have been working in my studio for the pas few days. we’ve mapped the whole record. everything’s been going amazing. this record is going to be so much fun to make. it’s going to be a lot of work. probably more work than any other record we’ve ever done. but it’s all worth it. i love the direction this record is taking. more updates soon! deryck”
Underclass Hero, Sum 41’s last album, was released two-and-a-half years ago.
